How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photosession

Capturing the first days of your baby’s life is a beautiful way to preserve memories that will last a lifetime. Newborn photography sessions are special, but they also require a bit of preparation to ensure everything goes smoothly. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your session and make the most out of this experience.

1. Timing is Important

The best time to photograph newborns is within the first two weeks of life, ideally between 5-21 days old. At this stage, babies tend to be sleepier and more likely to curl up into those adorable poses. If your baby is already past this window, don’t worry! We can still capture beautiful moments, focusing on more natural and cozy interactions.

2. Keep Baby Comfortable

A happy, comfortable baby makes for beautiful photos. Here are a few ways to ensure your newborn stays relaxed during the session:

  • Keep the room warm, as babies love a cozy environment.

  • Feed your baby right before the session to keep them sleepy and content.

  • Dress them in loose-fitting clothes to avoid marks on their skin.

  • Have a pacifier nearby, if it helps in soothing them.

3. What to Wear

For parents and siblings, soft, neutral colors work best to keep the focus on your baby. Avoid bright colors, large logos, or busy patterns. Simple, light fabrics create a timeless look. Here are some examples of color palettes and outfit ideas. Click here to the Pinterest board.

If you'd like to include intimate or personal moments, such as breastfeeding, skin-to-skin contact, or photos with your baby dressed in only underwear or nude, this is absolutely welcome. My goal is to create a safe, comfortable, and respectful space where all forms of connection are celebrated.

4. Preparing the Space

If the session takes place at home, don’t stress about making your house perfect! I’ll find the best spots with natural light and simple, cozy backgrounds. A clutter-free space near a window works perfectly. If the session is in a studio, everything will be set up for a smooth experience.

5. Be Patient and Flexible

Newborn sessions take time. Babies have their own rhythm, and we’ll work around their needs, allowing time for feeding, changing, and soothing as needed. If your baby is fussy, don’t worry! It’s completely normal, and we’ll take breaks as necessary.

6. Meaningful Props and Details

If you have any special items you'd like to include, such as a favorite blanket, a family heirloom, or a small stuffed toy, feel free to bring them along. These details add a personal touch to your photos. And if you have any specific ideas or wishes for the photos, feel free to let me know!

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

Your baby will sense your energy, so the more relaxed you are, the smoother the session will go. Trust the process, and enjoy these precious moments. These early days pass so quickly, and your newborn session is all about capturing the love and connection within your family.

By preparing ahead of time, you’ll help create a stress-free and enjoyable experience, resulting in beautiful photos you’ll cherish forever. I can’t wait to capture these precious first memories with you!
